LIVE 190 • Slack Key Bach (Bourrée in Open A Taro Patch)

I went through a phase a few years back where I was regularly listening to the Pablo Casals recordings of the Bach cello suites.  They were on the USB stick with music I had in my car, and for some reason the memory of listening to them that stands out is that of making my way home from Kapiolani Park after yoga class.  Driving along Paki Avenue, listening to the mellow cello suites as the moon was coming out, looking up through the sunroof of my Honda at the moonlight filtering through the intricate silhouettes created by the canopy of Monkeypod trees lining the avenue, an amazing textured design.

Recently, I decided to arrange part II of the Bourrée from Bach’s Cello Suite 4 (BWV 1010) in Taro Patch tuning.  Rather than the usual Open G, I used a capo on the 2nd fret to play the piece in Open A which helped make some of the stretches a little easier.  This arrangement is based on Stanley Yates’s excellent arrangements of the cello suites for guitar (Mel Bay).  In further adapting it for Taro Patch, I decided to use various fingerings and add some harmonics in place of fretted notes – things that one wouldn’t normally do, but which were part of the fun of playing this piece in an open tuning.  Hope you enjoy.

LIVE 178 • Here Comes the Sun (912ce)

Here’s a snappy take of my arrangement of the Harrison classic Here Comes the Sun.  It’s a bright, happy tune that sounds great on acoustic guitar.  Hope you enjoy.

LIVE 172 • Bron~Yr~Aur (312ce)

Bron-Yr-Aur is probably my favorite Led Zeppelin acoustic song.  Written by Jimmy Page about a tranquil cottage in the Welsh countryside, the song is meditative and bucolic; it always puts me in a different place whenever I hear it or play it.  This version was recorded on my Taylor 312ce.

LIVE 156 • Here Comes the Sun – Fingerstyle Beatles Cover (Taylor 412ce)

One of the classic George Harrison songs from the Abbey Road album, Here Comes the Sun is a bright, happy tune that sounds great on acoustic guitar.  This is an alternate take of my  fingerstyle arrangement of the song.  Hope you enjoy.

LIVE 157 • Meditation on Which Will (Nick Drake Guitar Part)

Nick Drake’s guitar parts (and music in general) seem to live in their own magical realm that we can tap into whenever listening to an album like Pink Moon.  I was trying a new recording set up one day and decided to see how it would sound playing my version of the guitar part from “Which Will,” which is not really meant as a note-for-note copy of the original guitar part.  Rather, I wanted to do a sort of meditation on the part and just enjoy the mellow vibes that Drake’s music always impart to me.  Hope you enjoy.

LIVE 137 • I’m on Fire (Alt Take, 412ce)

Here’s an alternate take of my arrangement of the Springsteen classic I’m on Fire.  This is a really cool little song – almost a sketch at under 3 minutes long, but it really creates a great atmosphere in that short amount of time.  Hope you enjoy.

LIVE 141 • “Horn” Improv – Nick Drake Uke Cover

Here’s an improv around Nick Drake’s “Horn” I recorded one day between takes of another song I was working on.  Appearing as a sort of interlude on the Pink Moon album, Horn is a fascinating little study of a song in its own right.  I love the simple, atmospheric melody, and think it translated well to ukulele.  Hope you enjoy.

LIVE 129 • Rumble (Link Wray, Solo Ukulele)

The restless crowd.  The slit in the speaker cone.  The distortion.  The rock glory.  One of the most influential guitar songs ever, the story of Link Wray’s “Rumble” is the stuff of legend.  I’ve always loved the song, and have covered it on guitar (and taught it as a guitar teacher), but something made me want to try it on uke to see if some of the attitude would still filter through – regardless of the instrument.  I think it does.  Hope you enjoy.
